How to Get Pet Urine Smell Out of Carpet (and When to Call a Pro)

Pet urine odor is stubborn because the problem is usually not on the carpet - it is under it. Urine soaks through the carpet, into the pad, and sometimes into the sub-floor. The surface can look and feel clean while the pad underneath keeps releasing smell, especially when it is humid.

Fresh accident: act in the first 10 minutes

1. Blot, do not rub. Press a thick towel down hard to pull the liquid up. Stand on it. Repeat with dry towels until almost nothing transfers.
2. Rinse with cool water and blot again. This dilutes what soaked in.
3. Apply an enzyme cleaner made for pet urine (not a general carpet spray). Enzymes break down the compounds that cause the smell. Follow the label - most need to stay wet for 10+ minutes.
4. Cover it and let it dry slowly. Fast drying can leave residue behind.

What makes it worse

• Vinegar and baking soda. Popular online, but on real urine they mostly just move the smell around and can set some stains.
• Steam from a rental machine on an old spot. Heat can bond the odor compounds to the fiber. Use enzymes first, heat later.
• Masking sprays. They cover it for a day, then the pet often re-marks the same spot because it still smells like a bathroom to them.
• Scrubbing. It spreads the stain wider and damages the fibers.

Old or repeated accidents

If a spot has been hit more than once, or it has been there a while, home treatment usually gets you 70-80% of the way and then stalls. That last bit of smell is coming from the pad and sub-floor, where a spray bottle cannot reach.

This is where a professional treatment helps: we use a UV light to find every deposit (dried urine glows), treat each one with enzymes, and for soaked-through areas we apply treatment down into the pad and extract it. We will tell you honestly if a spot is beyond cleaning.

When the pad has to come out

For a spot that has been urinated on repeatedly over months, in the same place, no cleaning will fully fix it. The pad is saturated and the sub-floor may need to be sealed. At that point the fix is: pull back the carpet, replace that section of pad, seal the sub-floor, re-lay the carpet. It is more involved but it is the only permanent answer for those cases, and it is far cheaper than replacing the carpet.
