Getting Your Carpets Ready for the Holidays: A Central Coast Timeline

If you host for the holidays, the carpets get judged - by you, and quietly by everyone who walks in. The trick is not doing it the day before. Holiday carpet cleaning works best when you plan backward from the first time people come over.

Why timing matters

Two reasons. First, carpet needs 6 to 24 hours to dry, and on the foggy Central Coast it leans toward the longer end. You do not want damp carpet the morning of Thanksgiving. Second, the two weeks before Thanksgiving and the two before Christmas are the busiest of the year for every cleaner in SLO County. Wait until then and you take whatever slot is left, if any.

The backward plan

3 to 4 weeks before your first event: book the appointment. This is the single most useful thing on this list. You lock in a good time slot and you are not scrambling.

1 to 2 weeks before: get the cleaning done. This gives the carpet time to fully dry and settle, and leaves a buffer if a spot needs a second pass.

A few days before: quick vacuum of the traffic lanes, spot-check for anything new.

The day of: relax. It is already handled.

What to have cleaned

• Traffic lanes and the entry - the paths from the front door to the kitchen and the living room take the most abuse
• The dining room, if you have carpet there - it is about to host a lot of chairs and a lot of gravy
• Any room guests will sleep in
• The couch and dining chairs (upholstery cleaning) if they are looking tired - this is often what people actually notice

After the holidays

Book a second, lighter cleaning for January to pull out whatever the season left behind - tracked-in mud, spilled wine, pine needles, that one mystery spot. Carpets that get cleaned before and after the holidays stay in much better shape year to year.
